Crafting with My Daughter: Perler Beads

All my daughter Fiona wanted for Christmas this year was crafting supplies. That -- plus a pony -- was pretty much her entire list. Since we have no room in our backyard for a horse I started picking up a few fun craft supplies here and there.

And I realized what she really wants & needs is time with her mom. So I made part of her gift an ongoing date for the two of us every Saturday to hang out and make some kind of craft project together.

First up, melting perler beads for bracelets. I found this pin showing how. (You can follow my "Children" Pinterest board here.)

Of course, half the fun is in the planning. Friday we picked out the color schemes we wanted and sorted out those beads. We read through the instructions and I had Fiona write them out in her cute handwriting. So in case I get around to scrapbooking someday, we can stick that in there!

We found that 6 minutes at 400 degrees was about right for our oven. They melted down into little donuts. We also found that we had to remove the beads from the parchment paper pretty quickly or else the paper would stick to the back.

Voila, new bracelet!

We cooked some of the beads too long and the holes disappeared. They were still cute little guys, though, so we made them into enamel dot stickers by placing them on strips of mini Glue Dots.
